PDRN Meets K-Beauty
The Korean 10-step skincare routine is built on a philosophy of layering β applying products from thinnest to thickest consistency, each step serving a specific purpose. PDRN has become one of the most popular active ingredients in Korean skincare since 2024, with major K-beauty brands launching PDRN-infused products across virtually every category [2].
The good news: you do not need to use PDRN at every step. Understanding where PDRN delivers the most value helps you build an efficient, targeted routine that maximizes regenerative benefits without redundancy.
The 10 Steps β Where PDRN Fits
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
PDRN relevance: None
The oil cleansing step removes makeup, sunscreen, and sebum. This is a rinse-off step, so any PDRN included would be washed away before it could absorb. No PDRN oil cleansers exist on the market, and none are needed.
Recommended approach: Use any gentle oil cleanser or cleansing balm.
Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser
PDRN relevance: None
The second cleanse removes water-based impurities left after oil cleansing. Like step 1, this is a rinse-off step where PDRN would provide no benefit.
Recommended approach: Use a low-pH gel or foam cleanser.
Step 3: Exfoliation (1-2x per week)
PDRN relevance: Indirect
Chemical or physical exfoliation removes dead skin cells, which can improve the absorption of PDRN products applied in subsequent steps. Interestingly, PDRN can also help the skin recover from exfoliation β its anti-inflammatory properties soothe post-exfoliation sensitivity [1].
Recommended approach: Exfoliate first, then follow with PDRN products in later steps. On exfoliation days, PDRN serums are especially valuable for barrier recovery.
Step 4: Toner
PDRN relevance: High
This is the first leave-on step and an excellent entry point for PDRN. Korean PDRN toners are typically watery, fast-absorbing formulations that deliver a foundational layer of PDRN to freshly cleansed skin. The toner step prepares the skin to receive subsequent layers by balancing pH and providing initial hydration.
PDRN toners work well here because the thin consistency allows rapid absorption into the still-damp skin surface. The PDRN begins its regenerative signaling from the earliest stage of the routine [1][3].
Product examples: PDRN booster toners, PDRN hydrating toners
Step 5: Essence
PDRN relevance: High
Essences are a uniquely Korean step β more concentrated than toners but lighter than serums. PDRN essences deliver a higher concentration of active polynucleotides in a lightweight, easily absorbed vehicle. This step is where PDRN can start delivering meaningful regenerative effects.
Many Korean brands have developed PDRN essences that combine polynucleotide fragments with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and betaine, creating a dual-function product that hydrates while signaling collagen production [3].
Product examples: PDRN revitalizing essences, PDRN glow essences
Step 6: Serum / Ampoule
PDRN relevance: Highest
This is the most impactful step for PDRN delivery. Serums and ampoules contain the highest concentrations of active ingredients in the most penetration-optimized vehicles. If you only use PDRN at one step in your routine, this is the step to choose.
PDRN serums typically contain 1-5% polydeoxyribonucleotide along with complementary actives. Ampoules β the Korean term for super-concentrated treatments β may contain even higher PDRN percentages and are designed for intensive treatment periods [2].
The serum step offers the optimal balance of concentration, penetration, and contact time. Applied after toner and essence on well-prepared skin, PDRN serums can reach the deeper layers of the epidermis where fibroblast activation occurs [3].
Product examples: PDRN collagen serums, PDRN booster ampoules, PDRN rejuvenating serums
Step 7: Sheet Mask (1-3x per week)
PDRN relevance: High
Sheet masks are a Korean skincare hallmark, and PDRN sheet masks have become enormously popular. The extended contact time (15-20 minutes) and occlusive nature of the sheet create ideal conditions for PDRN absorption.
Use PDRN sheet masks as a replacement for the serum step 1-3 times per week for an intensive regenerative treatment. The remaining essence in the packet can be patted into the neck and decolletage after removing the mask.
Product examples: PDRN serum masks, PDRN hydrogel masks
Step 8: Eye Cream
PDRN relevance: Moderate to High
The periorbital area has thin, delicate skin that is prone to early aging. PDRN eye creams target crow's feet, under-eye crepiness, and dark circles by stimulating collagen synthesis in this fragile zone [2].
While dedicated PDRN eye creams are less common than PDRN serums, several Korean brands now offer them. Alternatively, you can gently pat a small amount of PDRN serum around the orbital bone before applying your regular eye cream.
Product examples: PDRN eye patches, PDRN eye creams
Step 9: Moisturizer
PDRN relevance: Moderate
PDRN moisturizers serve a dual purpose: sealing in the active layers beneath while delivering an additional dose of PDRN in a richer, more occlusive vehicle. The moisturizer step extends the contact time of all previously applied PDRN by preventing evaporation.
For those using PDRN at the serum step, a PDRN moisturizer adds incremental benefit but is not essential. However, if you prefer a simplified routine, a PDRN cream can serve as a combined treatment and moisturizing step [3].
Product examples: PDRN moisturizing creams, PDRN sleeping packs
Step 10: Sunscreen (AM only)
PDRN relevance: Low
Sunscreen is the final morning step and the most important product for preventing premature aging. While a few PDRN sunscreens exist, the primary function of this step is UV protection, not PDRN delivery. The sunscreen formula is optimized for UV filtering rather than active ingredient penetration.
That said, PDRN sunscreens offer a small added benefit: PDRN's anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe skin that is sensitive to chemical UV filters [1].
Recommended approach: Prioritize broad-spectrum protection (SPF 50+ PA++++). A PDRN sunscreen is a nice bonus, not a necessity.
Optimal PDRN Placement Strategy
Not every step needs a PDRN product. Here is the recommended priority for incorporating PDRN:
- Essential: Step 6 (Serum/Ampoule) β highest concentration, best absorption
- Highly recommended: Step 4 (Toner) β foundational PDRN layer, primes skin for subsequent steps
- Weekly boost: Step 7 (Sheet Mask) β intensive treatment 1-3 times per week
- Optional enhancement: Step 9 (Moisturizer) β seals and extends PDRN contact time
- Nice to have: Step 5 (Essence), Step 8 (Eye Cream), Step 10 (Sunscreen)
For most people, using PDRN at the serum step daily and adding a PDRN sheet mask 1-2 times weekly delivers excellent results without overcomplicating the routine.
Layering PDRN with Other Korean Actives
The 10-step routine often incorporates multiple active ingredients. Here is how PDRN layers with popular K-beauty actives:
- Hyaluronic acid (toner/essence): Apply before PDRN. HA attracts water to the skin surface, and PDRN builds on that hydration with regenerative signaling
- Niacinamide (serum): Can be layered with PDRN in the same step or applied sequentially. Both are well tolerated together
- Vitamin C (serum): Apply vitamin C first (lower pH), allow to absorb, then apply PDRN
- Retinol (PM serum): On retinol nights, apply PDRN first, then retinol. PDRN helps buffer potential retinol irritation [1]
- Centella asiatica (essence/cream): Excellent pairing with PDRN for anti-inflammatory synergy
- Snail mucin (essence): Layer before PDRN serum for added hydration and wound-healing support
- AHA/BHA (exfoliation step): Use at step 3, then follow with PDRN at step 6 for post-exfoliation repair
A Simplified PDRN K-Beauty Routine
If the full 10-step routine feels excessive, here is a streamlined 5-step version that preserves the most impactful PDRN delivery:
Morning
- Water-based cleanser
- PDRN toner
- PDRN serum
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
Evening
- Oil cleanser
- Water-based cleanser
- PDRN toner
- PDRN serum
- Moisturizer (or sleeping pack)
This pared-down version captures approximately 80% of the PDRN benefit of the full 10-step routine with half the steps [4].
