PDRN and SPF: Why Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable with PDRN

The scientific rationale is compelling: UV radiation causes cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and 6-4 photoproducts in cellular DNA, leading to mutations, premature aging, and potentially skin cancer. While sunscreen prevents the majority of new damage, no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV radiation — even SPF 50 allows approximately 2% of UVB through. Several Korean skincare brands have recognized this synergy by formulating PDRN directly into sunscreen products — combining polynucleotide repair technology with broad-spectrum UV filters in a single step. These PDRN sunscreens offer the convenience of simultaneous protection and repair, particularly useful for those who find multi-step routines cumbersome. However, dedicated PDRN serums applied underneath sunscreen typically deliver higher concentrations of polynucleotides for more significant regenerative effects.

For anyone using PDRN to address signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, or post-inflammatory erythema, SPF is especially critical. PDRN stimulates collagen production and skin renewal — processes that can be rapidly undermined by unprotected sun exposure. New collagen is particularly vulnerable to UV-mediated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activation, which degrades the very structural proteins PDRN works to build.
